Peter Safran and James Gunn
Peter Safran and James Gunn the co-CEOs guiding DC Studios since late 2022, have been navigating the direction of the company. In a recent podcast appearance, Gunn recounted an early experience in his new role. He mentioned that he reached out to Ryan Reynolds, known for his role in the poorly received 2011 Green Lantern movie.
While Reynolds later achieved immense success with his portrayal of the witty, fourth-wall-breaking Deadpool, Gunn felt compelled to suggest that the actor might be interested in revisiting the DC universe. However, he received a rather blunt reply. “Ryan doesn’t hold back [laughs]. One of the first people I contacted after getting this position was Ryan Reynolds. I asked him, ‘Are you coming back?’ and he responded, ‘Get the f*** out of here.’ I’m joking! I didn’t genuinely mean for him to return,” Gunn shared during the show, according to Games Radar.
Why Ryan Reynolds Might Not Want to Return to the DC Universe?
The answer stems from his troubled past with the franchise. Reynolds’ experience in the 2011 Green Lantern film negatively affected his reputation as a leading actor, leaving a lasting impression that took a long time to overcome. By the time DC Studios approached him for a potential comeback, he had evolved into a major star in Hollywood, largely due to the remarkable success of the Deadpool series.
Deadpool changed the superhero landscape with its unique tone and achieved record-breaking box office sales. In 2024, Deadpool & Wolverine solidified its position as the highest-grossing R-rated film to date. Furthermore, Deadpool has now become the second-highest-grossing character in Marvel’s lineup, adding to Ryan Reynolds’ legacy in the Marvel universe.
